As reported by the Spanish "Primera" league club on Tuesday, former Spanish national team goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has signed a new contract with the "bats" and agreed to stay at the "Mestalla" until 2009.
"He will remain in our team for the next two years," said the club's sports director, Amedeo Carboni, to the newspaper "Marca." "My duties do not allow me to say much, but we did not want to prolong these negotiations for too long."
The 37-year-old goalkeeper joined "Valencia" in 1998, and during that time he helped the team win the Spanish League title in 2002 and 2004, as well as reach the UEFA Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001. In 2004, he also became the winner of the UEFA Cup tournament, defeating "Marseille" in the final with a score of 2-0.
A. Carboni also announced that the contract extension with captain David Albelda will also not cause "any problems," and the Spanish national team goalkeeper will remain at "Valencia" for a long time.
