The defender of the French national team and the Spanish champion club Lilian Thuram will not be able to help his team for the whole month due to a torn thigh muscle. The 34-year-old veteran, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, suffered an injury in the 60th minute of the 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid on Thursday and was forced to leave the field. His place in the Catalonia club's defense was temporarily taken by Thiago Motta.
L. Thuram added to the list of injured team defenders to six. Brazilians Edmilson and Sylvinho, Mexican Rafael Marquez, Dutch Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and Spaniard Olegueras are all struggling with various problems, but after about two weeks most of them should return for the match against Getafe.
Barcelona recently lost 1-0 in the Club World Cup final to the Brazilian club Internacional. In the national championship, after playing 15 matches, Barcelona has 34 points and is in second place, just three points behind the leaders. Sevilla is currently leading the championship, having played more matches.
