The most expensive football player in the world in 2000, Luis Figo, will spend the last years of his career in Saudi Arabia.
After intense negotiations, the 34-year-old veteran signed a one-year contract with the team "Al Ittihad," which should be complemented this summer.
"We have officially put our signatures on a one-year contract, which will take effect on July 1. This is one of the most expensive transfers in the history of Middle Eastern nations," rejoiced the president of "Al Ittihad," Mansouras al Balwi, without disclosing the financial terms.
Interestingly, there were reports in the media that negotiations between L. Figo and the Saudi Arabian club were interrupted and will not be resumed. This was partially confirmed by the coach of Milan, where the Portuguese will finish this season, Roberto Mancini, stating that he does not intend to release an important player to go abroad.
"I am not interested in the possibility of losing L. Figo," he said at a press conference in Bahrain, where "Inter" club held a training camp during the winter break.
Prior to this, L. Figo represented Lisbon's "Sporting" from 1989-1995, the Barcelona team from 1995-2000, before moving to Milan's "Inter," playing in the royal Madrid club "Real" from 2000-2005.
