One of the most prestigious clubs in Scotland, Glasgow Rangers, continues to make changes. On Thursday, the club terminated its relationship with French coach Paul Le Guen and until the end of this season, they hired defender Andy Webster from the English team Wigan. Soon, they may appoint Scotland's national team coach Walter Smith as their new manager.
Since September, when the 24-year-old A. Webster joined the Wigan team coached by Paulo Jewell, the former Hearts defender has only played four games this season, and in all of them, he came on as a substitute.
However, the Scottish national team defender will not be able to debut with his new team yet, as they will face the Dunfermline club in the third round of the national cup on Sunday.
"I can't wait for the moment to play in the 'Ibrox' stadium, which accommodates 50,000 people," said A. Webster to the club's website, after requesting FIFA to leave the Hearts club. "I am extremely happy to return to Scotland and play for Rangers. I agreed to be loaned until the end of the season, and I hope I can stay here permanently."
"Andy will be a great purchase for the club," said interim Rangers manager Iain Durrant.
His tenure may not be long, as Rangers are actively looking to replace P. Le Guen and are considering two club legends - current Scotland national team coach Walter Smith, with whom the Rangers won the national championship title nine times in a row, and the former Rangers striker Ally McCoist, who currently works with Stuart McCall at Sheffield Utd.
The Scottish Football Association has not yet confirmed this information and stated that Rangers have not officially approached them. However, former Scotland national team coach Craig Brown revealed that Rangers president David Murray has a close relationship with the coach: "The president has a very close relationship with Walter Smith and Ally McCoist. In my opinion, their appointment would be excellent."
Currently, the Glasgow club is in 2nd place in the Scottish Premier League with 39 points, trailing the leader and city rival Celtic by as much as 17 points.
