Vilnius announced that it has extended the contract with the Lithuanian youth national team defender Darvydas Šernas. The new contract is signed for two years and is valid until the end of 2008.
"I had offers from foreign clubs as well. However, I decided that it's not yet time to leave the team where I started my professional career. I believe that playing for 'Vėtra' will give me more opportunities to improve. I am still young and I will have time to start a career as a legionnaire," the player officially stated on the club's website.
Last season in the A League, the defender played in 26 matches and scored 3 goals against opponents' goalkeepers.
At 22 years old, he is one of the veterans of the team, playing for 'Vėtra' since 2002. In total, D. Šernas has played 99 matches and scored 17 goals wearing the 'Vėtra' jersey in Lithuanian championships.
Along with the bronze medalist of the A League 'Vėtra', the captain Julius Raliukonis, Slovenian Maksut Azizi, Macedonians Bobo Božinovski and Dejan Miloševski have already extended their contracts. Former Kėdainiai "Nevėžis" attacking leader Vitalijus Stankevičius has also joined the team, and soon the defender Mindaugas Panka will sign his contract with "Vilnius".
Among the players of the capital's team, there are no longer veteran defenders Aidas Preikšaitis, assistant coach to head coach Aleksandr Tarchanov, the disappointing legionnaire German Lovcev, and according to EuroFootball.com, one of the team's veterans will announce the end of his career on Monday.
