Defender Christian Wilhelmsson from the French championship's outsider club will join the ranks of one of the leaders in Serie A. The Rome club borrowed the Swede until the end of this season and will also consider the possibility of buying out his contract for 3 million euros in the summer.
The 27-year-old Ch. Wilhelmsson, whose contract with Nantes is valid until the summer of 2011, was supposed to undergo a medical examination in Italy on Tuesday and join the Rome team.
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was pleased with the new defender from Sweden: "I know him since five years ago when he tried to establish himself in Udinese. Christian is an excellent attacking full-back who can play on both the left and right flanks. From now on, we have seven players for four positions on the field, and for this reason, we feel good."
Christian Wilhelmsson started his career in 1996 at the Swedish club Mjalby, then played for Norway's Stabaek, Belgium's Anderlecht, and arrived at Nantes in the summer of 2006. He has played 38 matches for the Swedish national team and scored 3 goals.
According to C. Wilhelmsson's agent Fabio Alho, his client was also of interest to the English clubs Middlesbrough and Tottenham, but the Italians presented the most concrete offer.
