The first signing of the new "Šiauliai" coach Darius Magdišauskas will be the 34-year-old defender Egidijus Žukauskas. The player is expected to sign a one-year contract as soon as he passes his medical examination.
"We hope that such an experienced player will strengthen the defensive line of "Šiauliai" and pass on his experience to the young footballers. He and Deivydas Lunskis (captain of "Šiauliai" - ed. note) will be the main pillars of the team's defense," said the club's director Saulius Lesnickas about the new acquisition.
E. Žukauskas, who has been playing for Klaipėda's "Atlantas" since 2003, was also pleased to move to "Šiauliai": "I almost agreed to move to Šiauliai last summer, but I stayed in Klaipėda. Maybe I would have continued playing in this team, but "Atlantas" did not keep their promises."
"And "Šiauliai," from what I understand, is a young and ambitious club," said the defender. "I hope my experience will be useful to them."
"I know the coach Darius Magdišauskas, Gintaras Juodeikis (the club's defender) and Saulius Vertelis (former head coach of the team, now holding coaching positions in the club), I played with them back in the "Romar" days," answered E. Žukauskas when asked why he chose "Šiauliai."
During his career, the 34-year-old defender has played for Mažeikiai's "Romar," Klaipėda's "Argus," "Atlantas," Šiauliai's "Kareda," Machačkala's "Andži," Liepāja's "Metalurgs," "Riga," and Smolensk's "Kristal" teams.
With "Romar" and "Kareda," E. Žukauskas has been a two-time Lithuanian champion, and with "Atlantas" he won the LFF Cup.
