The multiple "Ligue 1" champion and France national team goalkeeper hinted to journalists that he does not plan to play forever and is already thinking about the end of his career.
The 34-year-old main French goalkeeper admitted that he set a limit for himself when he started his career, deciding to play until the age of 35. Currently, the player's contract with "Lyon" is valid for another year and it is very likely that the player will end his sports career after the contract expires.
"Am I still preparing to play for a long time? To be honest, no," Coupet said. "When I started playing, I told myself that I would play until I was 35. Now I have only a year left, but for now I feel as great as ever, so it's very difficult to decide."
Coupet also revealed that he no longer feels hurt that last year during the World Cup France's national team coach Raymond Domenech entrusted the main goalkeeper position not to him, but to veteran Fabien Barthez.
"Whatever happened during the World Cup, I experienced something extraordinary with the whole team," Coupet said. "I will remember it for the rest of my life."
"Perhaps it was a bit painful for me at first, but now I am proud that I was part of a team that won the title of World Vice Champions. If I had not even been on the bench, it would have been much more painful, because playing for the French national team is the dream of every player."
"I dreamed of representing my country when I was just six years old. Now I am 34, but I still feel the same feeling," he added.
Coupet also admitted that he is not afraid that Fabien Barthez, who has renewed his career and currently represents "Nantes," could push him out of the French national team goalkeeping position.
"I am not worried about Barthez. The younger French goalkeepers worry me much more, as those guys really look great," he said.
