Spanish club and Icelandic national team striker Eidur Gudjohnsen was named the best Icelandic footballer of 2006. This title was his third time receiving this honor.
The best Icelandic footballer of the year was chosen by 200 former and current employees of the country's football federation and national team players. The player nicknamed "Gudja" surpassed "Reading" and "Charlton" defenders Ivar Ingimarsson and Hermann Hreidarsson to become the laureate.
"It's always great to be honored and recognized for your work," said E. Gudjohnsen, who won the Premier League with Chelsea last year and moved to Barcelona in the summer.
The 28-year-old striker, who represented Chelsea for six years and scored 78 goals in 263 matches, believes that he will achieve new heights with Barcelona.
"Moving from England to Spain was an important decision, but I have no regrets. In Spain, I always have the opportunity to show myself and help the team in any way I can," said the new Barcelona forward, who scored 5 goals for the club this season.
