On Sunday, the remaining 21 matches of the 21st round were played in Italy. "Inter" secured their 14th consecutive victory in the league, while "Roma" and "Milan" managed to win by narrow margins. Key victories were achieved by "Fiorentina" and "Reggina", and the bottom-ranked team in the championship, "Ascoli", finally celebrated a win.
Just a few days ago, "Inter" defeated "Sampdoria" 3-0 in the Italian Cup semi-finals, and on Sunday, the same teams faced each other again, this time in the "Serie A" championship, at the same stadium. The result did not differ much, as "Inter" triumphed again, this time with a score of 2-0.
The beginning of the match was emotional. In the 7th minute, "Sampdoria" player Gennaro Del Vecchio committed a foul against the opponent's goalkeeper. Italian defender Marco Materazzi came to express his dissatisfaction immediately. G. Del Vecchio headbutted the world champion Materazzi and was sent off the field.
In the 38th minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic put the visitors ahead. The Swede attempted a shot over himself but missed, however, a few seconds later, after another cross into the penalty area, the forward headed the ball into the goal and scored. During the shot, Z. Ibrahimovic clashed heads with opponent Giulio Falcone, and both players needed medical attention.
In the 75th minute, Z. Ibrahimovic managed to assist with a goal. He took advantage of an error by opponent Luigi Salo and passed the ball to his teammate Maicon, who secured his team's victory with a precise shot.
"Roma" hosted "Siena" at home, and the capital team players knew well that in order to maintain their hopes of winning the "Scudetto", it was necessary to win. This goal was achieved, as "Roma" triumphed with a score of 1-0.
The victory for the second-placed club was determined by the first goal of the season from Mirko Vucinic. The forward, who came from "Lecce" at the beginning of the season, scored in the 62nd minute. Receiving a pass from his teammate Francesco Tavano, the Montenegrin forward with a left-footed shot outsmarted the opponents' goalkeeper.
"Milan" also managed to defeat their opponents. The club won 1-0 at home against "Parma".
In this match, Milan's new acquisition Massimo Oddo made his debut for the club, with veteran Filippo Inzaghi as the hero. In the 76th minute, the Italian received the ball after an unsuccessful penalty kick by Andrea Pirlo and sent it into the goal.
"Fiorentina" won at home against "Livorno" 2-1 and reduced the gap to this club to just one point.
Although the Florence club dominated throughout the match, the visitors scored first. In the 27th minute, Cristiano Lucarelli tricked three defenders, outsmarted the opponents' goalkeeper, and put his team ahead.
However, "Fiorentina" did not give up, and in the 68th minute, they managed to equalize the score. Adriano Mutu's shot was saved by the "Livorno" goalkeeper, but Luca Toni was the first to reach the rebound, and the top scorer of the previous season in "Serie A" scored a goal. In the 82nd minute, the Italian passed the ball to Martin Jorgensen, who secured the victory for his team with a precise shot.
"Reggina" finally managed to climb out of the relegation zone. This was achieved through a 2-0 victory away against "Cagliari".
The visitors' victory was brought by two goals from Luca Vigiani - he headed in the first goal in the 47th minute to put his team ahead, and in the 58th minute, despite doubts about offside, he doubled the lead between the teams.
"Ascoli" incredibly managed to snatch a victory away against the "Messina" team at the end of the match. The game ended with a score of 2-1.
The hosts took the lead with a penalty goal by Alessandro Parisi in the 76th minute, but the situation changed drastically at the end of the match. In the 89th minute, Michele Paolucci equalized with a header. Soon after, "Ascoli" defender Luigi Di Biagio received a red card, but that did not prevent his team from snatching the victory. In the 94th minute, the same M. Paolucci, with a precise shot, once again outsmarted the opponents' goalkeeper.
"Atalanta" managed to let victory slip through their fingers at the end of the match and played a draw of 1-1 with the "Catania" team.
The Bergamo club took the lead in the 30th minute after Riccardo Zampagna scored, but in the 88th minute, Yuki Morimoto, playing his debut "Serie A" match, secured a draw for the "Catania" team.
Meanwhile, Verona's "Chievo" played a goalless draw at home against "Empoli".
