M. Materazzi claims he did not provoke G. Del Vecchio © EuroFootball.com

Milan and Italy national team defender says he did not provoke the Genoa footballer who hit him on the head.

The incident occurred during a weekend match, when in the 7th minute G. Del Vecchio hit his opponent on the head and was sent off the field.

M. Materazzi got angry at the opponent when he played roughly against "Inter" goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

My reaction was instinctive, I just wanted to defend my goalkeeper. I asked him what he was doing, then he pushed me, but I did not fall, however when he hit me on the head, I fell to the ground. He injured my lip. I admit my mistake when I make it, but in this situation, I did nothing wrong," said the world champion.

Sampdoria coach Walter Novellino also did not justify his team's player: "A professional cannot behave like that, and I do not intend to defend him. Even if he was provoked, his action is unjustifiable."
