The club, currently occupying the third place in the Italian "Serie A" championship, announced that they have signed a contract with Uruguayan youth national team and Montevideo "Danubio" striker Edinson Cavani, as well as outbid Polish national team striker Radoslaw Matusiak from "GKS" Belchatowo.
The 25-year-old Pole, who scored 9 goals in 15 matches in his country's championship, moved to "Palermo" for 2 million euros and signed a contract with the club valid until 2011.
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Uruguayan shone in the South American youth championship in Paraguay and immediately attracted the attention of European giants such as Turin's "Juventus" and "Milan". However, "Palermo" were quick to establish a connection with the player and lure him to their team.
"Yes, Cavani is a player of our team," confirmed "Palermo" president Maurizio Zamparini. "We were the only team that made a concrete offer to the Uruguayan club."
As reported, the player is moving to Italy for 5.25 million euros and should sign an official contract with the "Palermo" club this Tuesday.
"The Italian club was the only one that made us a concrete offer. The contract should be signed this Tuesday," confirmed the player's agent Pierpaolo Triulzi.
There were also reports in the Italian press that after acquiring the Uruguayan, "Palermo" will sell part of the player's rights to Turin's "Juventus", but club representatives declined to comment on this possibility.
Cavani is expected to replace another striker, David Di Michele, in the team, who did not participate in the team's training on Monday and was seen at one of the hotels in Milan, where the winter player market is taking place.
Unofficial sources claim that Di Michele may move to "Milan", and in exchange, "Palermo" should supplement with Brazilian national team striker Ricardo Oliveira. This possibility is not ruled out by the player himself.
"Everything is possible, but it doesn't depend solely on me," said Di Michele. "On the other hand, if I am here, it means that the relationship between me and 'Palermo' is not good."
