Just a few hours after Munich fired coach Felix Magath, the German club confirmed a new strategist - Ottmar Hitzfeld.
This coach is one of the most famous in Germany. O.Hitzfeld has triumphed in the Champions League twice - in 1997 with Borussia Dortmund, and in 2001 with Bayern Munich. The coach won the German champions title six times - in 1995 and 1996 with Dortmund team, and in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003 with Munich. With the latter, O.Hitzfeld also won two German and one Intercontinental trophies.
In 2004, F.Magath replaced O.Hitzfeld in the position of coach at Bayern, winning two more Bundesliga champions titles. However, the Bayern management fired him when the team dropped to 4th place in the German league.
"There was a serious threat that we might not qualify for the Champions League next season," said club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, referring to the main reason for Magath's dismissal.
Ottmar Hitzfeld will be officially introduced to the Bayern team on Thursday. The coach, who has not worked anywhere for the past two years, will make his debut in the Bundesliga match against Nurnberg on Friday.
