During the last hours of the winter transfer window, Glasgow forward Shaun Maloney joined Aston Villa. The Scot had already watched the English championship match between Newcastle and Aston Villa on Wednesday evening and then joined the Birmingham team, which should pay about 1.5 million euros for the player's transfer.
"Shaun is one of the most honest young footballers I know. He's a wonderful guy. But we called him because he is a great footballer," said Aston Villa coach Martin O'Neill, who had already trained Maloney at Glasgow club a few years ago.
The 23-year-old forward has been with Celtic since 1999, played 104 matches for the club, scored 26 goals, represented the Scottish national team twice, and was named the best young player in the Scottish Premier League last year.
Maloney's contract is valid until the end of the season, but the player has already preliminarily agreed with O'Neill on extending the contract.
