The captain of the Serbian national team and the goalkeeper of the Italian "Serie A" champions Inter Milan, Dejan Stankovic, has signed a new two-year contract with the "Nerazzuri" team and has committed to stay at the Italian club until 2010.
The 28-year-old player, who has become one of the leaders of the "Inter" team over the past few seasons, publicly stated a couple of weeks ago that he wants to continue his career with the team coached by Roberto Mancini.
D. Stankovic negotiated with "Inter" for quite some time, and finally both parties reached an agreement that the player will sign a new two-year contract.
The Serbian is immensely grateful to the current club president Massimo Moratti and the former "Inter" president Giacinto Facchetti, who passed away a few months ago, for bringing him to the "Inter" team.
"I want to thank 'Inter' president Massimo Moratti and all the other directors for offering me this contract," said the former "Crvena Zvezda" goalkeeper. "I also want to thank former club president Giacinto Facchetti, who brought me to this team and with whom we had a very good relationship."
D. Stankovic was voted the best player of the year in Serbia in 2006. He joined "Inter" in January 2004, leaving the Rome-based team "Lazio." During his time at "Lazio," the player spent five and a half seasons, winning the UEFA Cup, "Serie A" championship, and the Italian Cup twice.
The goalkeeper started his career in 1994 at Belgrade's "Crvena Zvezda" team, and after four seasons, he moved to Italy. While playing for "Lazio" until 2004, he scored 22 goals in 137 matches. In the Serbian national team, D. Stankovic has scored 11 goals in 60 games against opponents' goalkeepers.
This season is going very well for the Serbian, as he has scored five goals in 20 matches in the Italian championship and has played five matches in the UEFA Champions League. "Inter" will face the Spanish La Liga team Valencia in the round of 16 on February 21, with the return leg scheduled for March 6.
