After the 0-0 draw on Saturday in their own stadium against the team, the Spanish coach Rafa Benitez burst into anger and called the opponents' club small. This did not go unnoticed by the rivals and received a backlash from the "Everton" camp.
"Rafa Benitez is a minority, consisting of one person, who thinks that 'Everton' is a small team. We expected much more from the 'Liverpool' coach," said "Everton" general director Keith Wyness on the club's official website.
"When you play at 'Anfield' stadium (Liverpool's stadium), you can always expect tough games against smaller teams," shared Benitez.
But the Spaniard did not stop there and aimed even more criticism at his opponents.
"There was one team on the pitch that wanted to win, and one that did not want to lose. Nine of their players were constantly defending. When you play against a big club, a draw sometimes is a good result," Benitez spared no bitter words for the opponents.
However, "Everton" coach David Moyes had a completely different opinion after the match and said that his team was unlucky and failed to secure a victory.
"This season we have already taken four points from the 'Liverpool' team, so we are on the right track. Our clubs are separated by approximately 100 million pounds in expenses, but we are trying to do everything we can to reduce that difference. Of course, I would have preferred to show something more, but it is not easy to achieve the desired result and we did not do badly. With a little luck, we could have even won," said Moyes.
"It is unpleasant to hear such unnecessary comments after a match that was a logical local derby," regretted "Everton" director K. Wyness.
