Spanish national team defender Andres Iniesta expressed his hope that the victory obtained on Wednesday in the friendly match against England will give them confidence after a rough start in the qualification for the 2008 European Championship.
"It was an important victory for us - a victory against England will give us prestige, especially since it was achieved away from home," said the victorious goal-scoring Barcelona defender.
"In my opinion, we played well and deserved to win, which will give us additional confidence before the qualifying matches begin," explained the footballer the significance of the victory.
The Spanish national team had a poor start to the European Championship qualification and currently ranks 5th in Group F, trailing behind the group leaders Sweden by nine points. The Spaniards won only one out of three matches - 4-0 against Liechtenstein, but lost to Northern Ireland 3-2 and Sweden 2-0 in away matches.
On March 24th, Spain will host the Danish national team in second place, and four days later - the team from Iceland.
Iniesta stated that if they are able to play as well as they did against the English national team, then they could hope to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.
"These matches proved that we can overcome anything, although we should not overestimate ourselves, as we only won one match. If we remain focused and play like we did against the English, then the results will come. We must strive and be more consistent," added the defender.
