London team strategist Arsene Wenger stated that national team football is boring.
"If we pushed national pride aside, then you should agree that national team games are completely uninteresting," A. Wenger said in an interview given on Friday.
"National team football is boring, you have to agree with that. I don't like it for two reasons: club football is moving forward, while national team football is moving backward," the Frenchman continued.
A. Wenger responded to comments made by the chairman of Middlesbrough club, Steve Gibson. The latter criticized the English football structure and expressed disappointment that clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool do not make much effort for the English national team.
The London team strategist believes that officials should stop the decline of national team football.
"I think football is moving forward and more towards club football. Currently, club football is more interesting to watch than national team football - this is true in England, France, Brazil, Argentina," said the Arsenal strategist.
"Matches are boring. If we were to base it on the game England vs. the Faroe Islands - in reality, nobody would be interested, but there is a love for one's country," explained the Frenchman.
A. Wenger promises to continue his foreign player policy at Arsenal, as he does not believe it would be a hindrance to the English national team: "When I buy a player, nationality means nothing - quality is the most important. If I gave you good wine, you would first taste it to see if it is really good, and then ask where it's from."
"The only thing I can say is that whenever the English national team loses, it is always my fault, even when I am not at the match," Wenger said at the end of the interview.
