"Borussia Dortmund terminated the contract with the team's head coach Matthias Sammer. This decision was made by mutual agreement during a meeting on Sunday, where the coach talked with the club's leaders.
'We sat down and agreed that this would be the best for both parties,' said Borussia's president Gerd Niebaum.
Former Borussia Dortmund player and German national team player Sammer became the coach of Borussia in 2002. His debut season was excellent - they won the German championship and reached the final of the UEFA Cup. Unfortunately, the results deteriorated, and after an average previous season, the last one was quite unsuccessful: Borussia initially lost to a team in the Champions League qualifiers, and later only finished sixth in the Bundesliga and did not secure a place in the UEFA Cup for the next year. Now Sammer is the main candidate to take over the coaching position, as it is vacant after Felix Magath's departure."
