The team of the leader of the German Bundesliga Championship - bad news. The goalkeeper of the Uruguayan national team will miss the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury.
The 28-year-old player injured the cruciate ligaments in his left knee in the 2-0 victory last weekend against Berlin's "Hertha" in the second half and will not be able to help "Schalke" for the rest of the season.
"It's tragic. Unfortunately, the season is already over for him. He will need to undergo surgery," - "Schalke" club doctor Thorsten Rarreckas expressed disappointment after tests were performed on the goalkeeper on Sunday.
This season, G. Varela was a key player in the main lineup led by Mirko Slomko and managed to score two goals and formed a trio of attackers with the German national team striker Kevin Kuranyi and the Danish national team player Peter Lovenkrands.
It is thanks to these players that "Schalke" is currently leading the Bundesliga standings this season and is ahead of the closest competitor Werder Bremen by six points.
