The Premier League club Liverpool took advantage of a clause in the contract of the Portuguese national team defender and extended his contract for another year. This means that the defender agreed to stay at Goodison Park until the summer of 2008.
The 32-year-old player left Porto in August 2005, with whom he won the UEFA Champions League in 2003, and moved to an English club for a sum of 1.5 million pounds sterling.
His contract was set to expire this summer, but the Everton club wanted to keep the full-back N. Valente in the team and extended his contract for another year. Everton's head coach David Moyes confirmed that the Portuguese legionnaire will stay at the club for another year.
"We took advantage of a clause in his contract and extended his contract for another year," Moyes officially stated on the club's website.
This season, the defender had to miss the Football Association (FA) Cup match against Blackburn on January 7 due to a knee injury, which resulted in a 4-1 defeat and their elimination from further competition.
Since joining Moyes' team, N. Valente has been plagued by injuries and has only played 43 matches for Everton, failing to score a goal. However, during that time, he managed to establish himself in the team and is a key player.
The defender represented the Portuguese national team 27 times. He also participated in the European Championship held in Portugal in 2004, and was included in the squad for last year's World Cup in Germany, where Portugal reached the semi-finals.
