After the weekend matches in the Netherlands, the defending champions PSV Eindhoven once again pulled away from their pursuers and secured the Eredivisie title. Meanwhile, their closest rivals AZ Alkmaar and Ajax Amsterdam both dropped important points.
In an away match against the underdogs Heracles Almelo, PSV struggled to break through for a long time and scored their first goal with just over 15 minutes left in the game. At the end of the match, in extra time, Diego Tardelli scored a second goal to earn PSV three points. After this victory, PSV leads their closest rivals by five points.
Amsterdam's Ajax unexpectedly failed to beat another underdog, Excelsior Rotterdam, at home, with all goals scored in the first half. The capital team took the lead with a goal from Edgar Davids, but Andwele Slory equalized the score after six minutes, followed by Eldridge Rojer. Huntelaar leveled the score six minutes before the end of the first half.
Alkmaar's AZ missed the opportunity to overtake Ajax, as they failed to beat Groningen away. After Danny Koevermans' goal gave the visitors the lead, Erik Nevland equalized in the second half.
Twente Enschede took advantage of the failure of these two clubs and drew closer to the leaders by defeating Heerenveen away. They are now just one point behind AZ and two points behind Ajax.
