Approaching the elections, it seems that politicians hurried to take care of the issue of the national stadium. The Vilnius City Municipality announces that they have completed negotiations for the design work of the National Stadium in Šeškinė and have signed a contract with the designers of the first Šeškinė stadium project, prepared in 1988, UAB "Viltekta."

It is stated that in the coming months an expert examination of the existing stadium structures will be carried out, and after that, decisions will be made on how to develop the new project.

According to the Vilnius municipality's announcement, the technical design of the National Stadium should be completed by the end of this year. With government funding, construction works on the stadium could begin as early as the beginning of next year. In that case, it is expected that the construction of the stadium will be completed by 2009 so that it can host the celebratory events of "Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009" and the commemoration of Lithuania's millennium.

It is planned that the National Stadium will be multi-purpose, with covered stands and 25,000 seats. Next to the stadium, in the second stage, a commercial sports center is planned to be built, which will consist of a multi-purpose sports hall with a pool, a training center, and a sports medicine clinic, as well as one covered soccer field, two open sports fields, open tennis courts, and open basketball courts.

In order to adopt the experience of other countries and to find the best architectural solution, foreign consultants are also planned to be additionally involved in the design work.
