London “club defender Wayne Bridge will undergo knee surgery, which will prevent him from playing for approximately three weeks.
W. Bridge, who last played on March 3 in a victorious match against Portsmouth, has been complaining of knee pain lately.
"Wayne has been suffering from knee pain for three weeks now. Tests have shown that he has a torn meniscus, which will require surgery. We believe that the rehabilitation will last three weeks – that's how long it took for Damien Duff to recover after a similar operation, but first we need to wait for the surgery and initial prognosis," said Chelsea club doctor Bryan English.
The defender representing the London club since 2003, extended his contract last fall for another four years and should play for Chelsea until 2011.
W. Bridge's injury will also affect the England national team, which will play European Championship qualifying matches against Israel and Macedonia. Since the latter is injured, and Ashley Cole will miss the first match against Israel due to cards, England will be without key left-back defenders.
