After the mass brawl during last week's UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match in Valencia, the UEFA disciplinary committee imposed fines of almost 156 thousand euros (almost 540 thousand litas) on Milan, and the Spanish player David Navarro, who was the most "notable" in the fight, was disqualified for seven months.
These sanctions were imposed by UEFA after analyzing the recorded footage and the official reports of the delegates and referees about the brawl that occurred after the 0-0 draw in the second leg match in Valencia. Since the first leg in Milan ended 2-2, the Spanish club advanced due to the away goals scored.
In addition to D.Navarro, other participants in the brawl also received slightly milder penalties. Inter defenders Nicolas Burdisso and Maicon received six-match bans, while Valencia defender Carlos Marchena received a four-match ban.
Inter defender Ivan Cordoba and forward Julio Cruz received three and two-match bans respectively.
All players will serve their bans only in UEFA-organized club competitions such as the Champions League, UEFA Cup, and Intertoto Cup. However, UEFA announced that they will request FIFA to approve D.Navarro's disqualification - in that case, the Valencia defender would not be able to play in the Spanish league or international tournaments.
All players who received bans can appeal in writing within three days.
