In Lionel Messi's 1000th career game, Argentinians defeated the Australian national team 2:1 and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals.
The first half started off slowly. The only notable incident, which did not end in a goal, was when one of the Australian players handled the ball in the penalty area, but the referee did not award a penalty kick.
In the 35th minute, Lionel Messi scored in his 1000th game. It was his first goal as a PSG forward in his World Cup knockout stage career, making it his 789th goal overall.
The second half was much more active from both teams.
In the 57th minute, Julian Alvarez doubled the score after a rough mistake by Matthew Ryan.
L. Messi had the opportunity to score the third goal for Argentina and seal the match after a brilliant run, but the ball was blocked by one of the Australian defenders.
In the 77th minute, Australia managed to reduce the deficit with a ricochet off Enzo Fernandez's body.
Shortly after, Graham Arnold's players had the opportunity to equalize. Aziz Behich made a fantastic run into Argentina's penalty area, tricking several players, but his shot was blocked by Lisandro Martinez at the last second.
