The champions club of Germany, Bayern Munich, announced on Thursday that Ottmar Hitzfeld, who returned to the team's helm at the end of January, will coach the team for one more season.
"We are satisfied with how quickly and smoothly we reached an agreement. By mutual agreement, we extended the contract for another year - until the end of the next season. Later, we will review the entire situation and perhaps offer the coach a long-term contract," said Bayern's manager Uli Hoeness.
Ottmar Hitzfeld, who won the Champions League and Bundesliga four times with the Munich club in 2001, returned to Bayern at the end of January this year, replacing the dismissed Felix Magath.
The coach's return at the beginning was not successful - Bayern lost 0-3 to Nurnberg, and in the first four matches with the new manager, the team only won once. However, last week the Munich team eliminated Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 and advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face Milan.
The crisis-lifting Bayern is currently in 4th place in the Bundesliga and trails the leaders Schalke by 6 points.
