The leaders of the German Bundesliga, Schalke, announced on Thursday that the head coach, Mirko Slomka, has agreed to extend his contract for another two years and will lead the club until June 2009.
"Our preseason expectations have been met - we are fighting for the title, even if we would like more," said the club's football director Andreas Mueller, quoted on the official club website.
Under the new contract, the 39-year-old M. Slomka will receive around 1.2 million euros (about 4.1 million litas) annually. According to the sports news agency SID, he will be one of the highest-paid coaches in Germany.
The German joined Schalke in October 2004 as an assistant coach and became the head coach in January 2006.
Schalke, leading the German championship, has a three-point advantage over second-placed Werder Bremen - much smaller than before, as they have only earned two points in the last four matches.
