One of the leaders of the team, Jamie Carragher, stated that they are currently one step below the leading London and clubs in the English leagues.
According to the 29-year-old footballer, the winners of the 2005 Champions League are capable of beating anyone in the two-legged knockout games, as they have proven before. However, in the long 10-month national season, achieving a higher position than third place can only be possible in the summer by strengthening the team with a few capable newcomers.
"People constantly ask me why we play so well in the Champions League, but we don't show consistency in the English championship. I don't know the exact answer - there are many reasons," said the defender.
"In the two-legged contests, when opponents have to play at our stadium, where an unparalleled atmosphere is created, we gain an advantage and it becomes very difficult for them.
"But we are still slightly behind Chelsea and Man Utd in the league, where we have to play 38 matches.
"It's a very long marathon, and we have a lot to improve. We started the season poorly this year, just like last year. The coaching staff needs to decide which direction to work in and how to strengthen during the summer to change the situation.
"As players, we must do everything to prove to them that we are worthy of playing here and for the team next season."
The Englishman also downplayed the battle for third place with London's Arsenal, but assured that the team will fight until the end: "Both us and them want to finish the season in third place.
"Of course, it is most important to secure a place in the Champions League, but we also want to finish the season as successfully as possible in the league this season.
