Already in the second minute of the match, the Portuguese took the lead: Costinho's shot was deflected by Žvirgždauskas, resulting in a corner, after which Couto headed the ball into the goal. Another goal was scored after ten minutes - Ricardo's long pass led Pauleta against Staučė, and the Portuguese forward elegantly placed the ball past the Lithuanian goalkeeper. The hosts were very active in the corners of the field and every pass towards the goal caused problems for the visitors' defenders. However, the Lithuanians did not give up, the Česnauskas brothers playing on the sides had good opportunities, but their attempts were inaccurate. At the end of the first half, Poškus could have reduced the score, but receiving a good pass, he failed to beat the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Portuguese coach Luiz Felipe Scolari made many substitutions. This reflected on the team's game, which slightly deteriorated. At first, there were many tough battles in the midfield, but the Portuguese could not overcome the Lithuanian defense. Only Figo's excellent run towards the Lithuanian goal stood out - the "Real" star confused several Lithuanians, but his shot was blocked by one of the defenders. The Lithuanians gradually gained confidence and in the 73rd minute, Poškus, receiving a pass inside the penalty area, was fouled. The referee awarded a penalty kick, which was converted by Vencevičius. It seemed that Lithuania could equalize, as Mikoliūnas actively joined the game, but his two shots went wide. With ten minutes left, Barasa unsuccessfully tried to clear the ball, it bounced to Nuno Gomes, and the forward just had to dodge Staučė and score into the empty goal. The Lithuanian players gradually ran out of strength, and this was evident in the last minutes: Miguel received a pass on the wing, sprinted forward, accurately passed the ball to Postiga, who headed the ball into the net without any interruption. The match ended with a not very convincing victory for the hosts.
