New owners Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks are reportedly ready to spend around 40 million pounds on new talented players for coach Rafael Benitez this summer.
Over the weekend, the specialist from Spain met with the businessmen and discussed the club's future prospects. It is expected that such a sum will be enough for Liverpool to realistically challenge for the English champion's title next season after a long break.
"We talked about future ideas," confirmed R. Benitez. "In my opinion, the club's prospects are simply excellent. G. Gillett and T. Hicks said we are heading in the right direction."
However, the former Valencia coach, who is in his third season in the port city, approaching a crucial UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash with PSV Eindhoven, refused to specify the exact amount that will be given to strengthen the team.
"We face a tough battle against PSV, so now is not the ideal time to talk about money," he said.
Among the candidates to join Liverpool were mentioned such famous names as Sevilla's defender Daniel Alves, Barcelona's forward Samuel Eto'o, and Valencia's attacking leader David Villa.
In addition to these investments, by the end of 2010, the club will move to a new stadium in "Stanley Park."
