The Gelzenkirchen club will finish this season without their striker Peter Løvenkrands. The Dane will need a second ankle operation.

The footballer strained his ankle tendons in the middle of February and underwent surgery at that time. P.Løvenkrands returned to the field last weekend in the Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich, which Schalke lost 0-2, but he only played for 30 minutes and suffered a similar injury again, requiring another operation.

"The match against Bayern had no influence on the injury. The problem is that Peter's ankle joint is chronically unstable," said Schalke club doctor Thorsten Rarreckas.

P.Løvenkrands joined the Gelzenkirchen team last summer from Glasgow Rangers and in this Bundesliga season he scored 6 goals in 23 matches.

With 7 rounds remaining until the end of the German championship, Schalke still occupies the first place and aims for their first German champions title in 50 years.
