UEFA will start an investigation into the incidents among the spectators during the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final match between "Roma" and "Man Utd." There were fears of violent fan confrontations even before the match.

The first clashes occurred well before the match in the lines at the entrance to the "Olimpico" stadium in Rome.

The first outburst of emotions during the match came after the home team took the lead in the 44th minute. Various objects, thrown by supporters of both teams, started flying in all directions.

"We will wait for the reports from our representatives on the match and will use television footage to find out what exactly happened there," explained UEFA press officer William Gaillard. "We will also have to determine the role played by the 'Man Utd' fans, who had already caused trouble at the match in Lens."

"Roma" club may be punished for disregarding safety requirements. Additionally, the club was urged to use local security workers instead of police units for security, but they refused, arguing that the police officers are capable of maintaining order during the matches.

It is reported that about 20 English fans were injured in Italy.

UEFA will announce its decision on sanctions for both clubs after the Easter weekend.
