The season ended early for the attacking midfielder Damien Duff - the footballer suffered a shin injury and will probably return to the field only after about a month.
The 28-year-old Irishman was injured in the weekend English Premier League match against Portsmouth, which Newcastle lost 1-2. Duff, who had been playing since the start of the game, was replaced in the 81st minute by Alberto Luque.
"There are no fractures, but the shin is very strained," said the team's head coach Glenn Roeder after thorough examinations. "He will definitely not play this season."
"This is a big disappointment for both us and Damien, because recently he had started to show the kind of form we were hoping for."
In the Premier League, Newcastle still has to play 4 matches against London's Chelsea, Reading, Blackburn, and Watford.
It is worth reminding that Duff arrived in Newcastle last summer for £5 million from Chelsea.
