On Thursday, Bayern Munich captain Oliver Kahn mentioned that next season he does not promise to share the duties of a goalkeeper with the young talent, backup Michael Rensing.
"Clearly, Michael is a great talent," Kahn said in an interview given to a German television about his teammate, who played excellently in the 2-2 result Champions League quarter-final match against AC Milan.
"His time will come... But my contract with the club is valid until 2008, and as long as I am able to play at a higher level, I don't think it would be possible to talk about (author's note - goalkeeper rotation) just because a few younger goalkeepers play excellently in other clubs," argued the former German national team goalkeeper Kahn.
Rensing has been with Bayern team since 2000 and had planned to replace Kahn this season, but the latter extended his contract with the team for two more years and will remain in the Munich team for one more season.
The former German U21 national team goalkeeper defended Bayern's goal 12 times in the Bundesliga and twice in the Champions League matches.
Kahn recently mentioned that he would like to stay in the team even after 2008, while Rensing stated that he would like to be transferred to another club if Kahn stays longer.
This season, two young goalkeepers from the Schalke and Bayer teams replaced well-known former German national team players: Manuel Neuer replaced Frank Rost, while Rene Adler recently replaced Hans-Jorg Butt.
For two years, from 2004 to 2006, Kahn shared the position of the German national team goalkeeper with Jens Lehmann, who was playing for London Arsenal team. Kahn completely lost this position in front of the 2006 World Cup.
