After losing 2-0 to "Stuttgart" on Saturday in the Bundesliga match, neither the head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld nor the team captain Oliver Kahn spared criticism in Munich.
"Today we played just tragically," said O. Hitzfeld after the match. "It was hard to get involved in the game, the players were running around without a clue. It is a great disappointment."
Earlier, the "Bayern" strategist infuriated the "Stuttgart" fans by stating, "We will definitely surpass 'Stuttgart' in the fight for third place, and everything else does not matter." However, now the fourth-placed "Bayern" is already five points behind third-placed "Stuttgart" with only four rounds left until the end of the championship.
The multiple German champions faced a real threat this year of not securing a ticket to the next year's UEFA Champions League, in which they have played continuously since 1997.
"Our boys should play better," a German spoke. "Today, the players on the field did not fight. We are not used to being fourth because 'Bayern' always fights for the first place. Therefore, the players lacked motivation, and the fear of finishing poorly appeared."
"I was very surprised at how we played the first half," said O. Kahn after the match, in which they conceded two goals by Brazilian Cacau in the first half. "We haven't played the first half this poorly in a long time."
"When they scored the first goal, everyone collapsed," said the "Bayern" captain. "You can't let the player who scored go wandering around the field with their head down, because you will quickly let in another goal. And that's what happened."
