In the English "Premier" league, Liverpool forward Andrew Johnson, who is currently in 6th place, will undergo ankle surgery at the end of this season, causing him to miss England's 2008 European Championship qualifying match against Estonia.
"After injuring his right ankle, we thought that further treatment would help his left ankle," said Everton club physiotherapist Mick Rathbone. "This was not the case, and he will undergo surgery as soon as possible after the last championship match."
The 26-year-old player may also miss England's friendly match against five-time World Champions Brazilian footballers on June 1st.
Everton has two matches left this season - a match at home against Portsmouth this Saturday and a meeting with London's Chelsea on May 13th.
Johnson, who has scored 11 goals in this season's competition, strained his right ankle tendon on April 21st in a 1-0 loss to London's West Ham, but also had long-term problems with his left ankle.
"Andy has been struggling with the same injury problems for several months, and currently he doesn't feel any better," added Rathbone.
In the 2008 European Championship qualifying match against Estonia, England's national team will face off on June 6th, and head coach Steve McClaren may invite club forward Michael Owen, who has recovered from a knee injury this week after a 10-month break from football, in place of Johnson.
