In the English Premier League, the forward of the club currently in 12th place, Antoine Sibierski, will be unable to help the "Magpies" team in the remaining two championship matches due to the fact that he will undergo a hand operation.
The French legionnaire's season ended on Monday in a 1-0 loss against "Reading" when he suffered an injury in a strange clash. Attempting to block the opponent's shot, A. Sibierski fell awkwardly to the ground and was taken to the hospital for an X-ray.
Doctors confirmed the need for surgery, and head coach Glenn Roeder announced that A. Sibierski will no longer play this season.
"Antoine's broken arm will require surgery and it is clear that he will not play any more matches this season," the coach said. "It is very unfortunate because he played fantastically this season."
"Fortunately for us, Shola Ameobi and Michael Owen have returned to the team after a long period, but I must admit that this season our team was plagued by injuries," the disappointed coach added.
32-year-old A. Sibierski was second only to Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins in terms of performance in the Newcastle team. In this Premier League championship, the Frenchman managed to score three times, as well as send the ball into the net four times in the UEFA Europa League and once in the FA Cup.
