England's national team goalkeeper and captain of the multiple-time country champions club, Steven Gerrard, revealed that he is negotiating with the "Reds" for a new contract that would obligate him to stay at Anfield until the end of his career.
The 26-year-old footballer, who helped Rafael Benitez's players reach the UEFA Champions League final again after a two-year hiatus, hopes to sign at least a four-year contract and earn 120,000 pounds sterling per week.
"I am currently in talks to extend my contract with Liverpool, as I have never felt happier playing football," said the versatile goalkeeper. "I am most eager for the contract issues to be resolved, so I can sign it soon."
The new Liverpool owner, Thomas Hicks, says he cannot see S. Gerrard playing for another team, and the captain of the "Reds" also wants to continue his career at Liverpool.
"We must keep our team's top-class players. It is very important to clarify everything regarding the contract, so they can play for the Liverpool team for a long time," added S. Gerrard.
The Englishman emphasized that he was very surprised that their opponents in the UEFA Champions League final on May 23rd in Athens will be an Italian club, just like two years ago: "I am convinced that we will defeat Milan in Athens and bring the trophy home. However, Milan is a fantastic team, and we know it will not be easy, so we need to maintain our highest level of play."
"I was seriously surprised that they managed to overcome the semifinal barrier, as I was sure that Man Utd would achieve the result. I thought the final would be between Liverpool and Man Utd, but I have to praise Milan because that evening they were excellent and deserved the victory and a ticket to Athens," said the Liverpool captain.
After a slow start to the season, S. Gerrard has now scored 7 goals in the Premier League, as well as three goals in UEFA Champions League matches and one in the League Cup."
