The coach of the Polish national team, Leo Beenhakker, has agreed to train in the knockout stages of the Dutch league in Rotterdam for a ticket to the UEFA Cup.
"It is a call of duty that I could not ignore," the strategist is quoted on the club's website. "I will do everything to ensure that the club plays in Europe next year."
The 64-year-old L. Beenhakker replaced Erwin Koeman as head coach of the Rotterdam club, who resigned this week after his team finished seventh in the regular season.
The teams that finished sixth to ninth in the regular Dutch league season play knockout matches for one spot in the UEFA Cup tournament. Feyenoord will begin their matches on Thursday away against Groningen.
This is the third time that L. Beenhakker is leading Feyenoord. Initially, he worked as a coach for youth teams in the club, later becoming the head coach of the first team and in 1999 helped Feyenoord win their last Dutch championship title.
In 2000, after leaving the Rotterdam club, he became the technical director of one of their fiercest rivals, Ajax Amsterdam, and recently gained fame by guiding Trinidad and Tobago footballers to the 2006 World Cup.
