ngland national team and club defender John Terry will miss the first Euro 2004 match on Sunday against the defending champions, French footballers.

England national team coach Sven Goran Eriksson stated that although the player participated in Friday's training session, he will not play on Sunday.

"John has already trained a bit today and we hope that he will join the training session again tomorrow," said the coach.

"It's a pity that he is injured. We all know what kind of season he had at Chelsea. But that's life and we hope that he will be ready for the second match and we are almost certain that he will play."

The 56-year-old Swede did not specify which player will replace 23-year-old J.Terry on the field. The most likely candidate is defender Ledley King. However, the coach also does not underestimate defender Jamie Carragher.

"Both of them are in great form and both looked good during training sessions and friendly matches," continued the coach.

"We are ready - apart from J.Terry, we have no problems," optimistically concluded S.G.Eriksson.
