In the German Bundesliga standings, 7th place Dortmund club extended defender Markus Brzensko's contract for another three years - the player pledged to stay at "Signal Iduna Park" until the summer of 2011.
The 22-year-old footballer, whose previous contract was supposed to expire on June 30, 2008, made his Bundesliga debut on November 9, 2003, and joined the Borussia youth team in 1993.
This season, the German played in 24 matches for Borussia and managed to score three goals, one of which was crucial in a 1-0 win against Berlin's "Hertha".
"Markus is a very reliable defender who constantly proves himself against top-class opponents in our team," said Borussia's sports director Michael Zorc.
The team's head coach Thomas Doll also highly values his defender and stated: "He is very strong both on the ground and in the air battles. Playing in defense with Christian Worns, we have been able to keep clean sheets in the last few matches. The extension of this contract shows how much we value Markus not only as a player but also as a person."
Borussia changed two coaches this season. First, the Dutch specialist Ben van Marwijk was dismissed by mutual agreement, and his replacement Jurgen Rober also did not last long in his position: after a victory against Munich's "Bayern" at the start of the second half of the season, there were consecutive losses, and the club management also decided to part ways with him.
In the middle of March, Borussia appointed Thomas Doll, who had previously coached the "Hamburger" team this year, as their head coach. By the end of the season, he managed to pull the team out of the relegation zone and secured 7th place.
In the last match of the German championship in the upcoming Sunday's final round, Borussia will face Bayer Leverkusen team one step above them in the standings.
