The new captain of the Spanish super-club Carles Puyol agreed to reduce his salary.
"Barca" president Joan Laporta, after his inauguration last summer, identified as one of his main goals to reduce the salaries of the club's stars.
Under the leadership of the former club president Joan Gaspart, many of the club's stars signed huge contracts, and Laporta's attempt to reduce them caused considerable dissatisfaction among many of the club's players.
Some players' unwillingness to reduce their salaries (for example, Argentine Javier Saviola) immediately led to rumors that players who did not agree to Laporta's proposed salary reduction might have to leave the team.
Now, for the club symbol and Spanish national team defender Puyol, who has significant authority among the other club players, agreeing to reduce his salary, Laporta hoped that other players would follow the example of the club captain.
