Quarterfinals - without European champions: E. Cavani double eliminated the Portuguese (VIDEO)

At 21:00 in Sochi, the second quarter-final match of the World Cup took place. Uruguay and Portugal national teams fought for a spot in the next stage. In a highly competitive match, Uruguay sent home the European champions - they triumphed with a score of 2-1.

In the 5th minute, the first shot on goal was made - the Portuguese, who started the game quite actively, allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to take a shot from outside the penalty area.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese, just moments later Uruguay had their first serious chance and gained the advantage - after a superb pass from Luis Suarez into the penalty area, Edinson Cavani headed the ball past the Portuguese goalkeeper.

In the 21st minute, Uruguay created another dangerous opportunity - Luis Suarez threatened Rui Patricio's goal with a penalty kick, but the Portuguese goalkeeper confidently reacted to the striker's attempt.

Portugal struggled to create chances of their own - Uruguay did an exemplary job in defense and did not give their opponents any chances. The first half ended with a score of 1-0.

Portugal played much more actively in the second half, and in the 55th minute finally broke through Uruguay's defense - Pepe rose above the others after a corner kick and equalized the score.

Portugal's triumph did not last long - in the 62nd minute, E. Cavani received another gift from the opponents and with a masterful shot from about 18 meters, sent the ball into Rui Patricio's goal for the second time in the game.

After conceding the goal, Uruguay retreated to defend - Portugal dominated possession, played on both sides, but breaking through the well-organized South American team's defense for a second time was not easy.

At the end of the match, the entire Portuguese team moved into the opponent's half, but the European champions failed to salvage the game.

Uruguay will face the France national team in the quarter-finals.
