Gelsenkirchen's "Schalke" confirmed reports that they received a request from coach Roberto Di Matteo to be released from his duties.
The Italian, who previously worked wonders with London's "Chelsea" club, worked in Germany for just seven months.
Recently, rumors surfaced that the 44-year-old coach would be dismissed due to poor results in the Bundesliga, but the specialist decided to be ahead of events and submitted a request to terminate the contract himself.
"Di Matteo had a clear vision for the club. And when it became clear that our views differed, Roberto made the appropriate decision," - said sports director Horst Heldt.
Together with the compatriot, assistant Attilio Lombardo and goalkeeper coach Massimo Battara left the club.
Last season, "Schalke" finished 6th in the German championship.
