The Liverpool team "Everton" coach Ronald Koeman knew he was facing dismissal when it became clear that the club failed to replace their main striker Romelu Lukaku.
The separation with the Dutchman happened after the "iris" match against London's "Arsenal", which they lost 5-2. Olivier Giroud also appeared in the ranks of the "Gunners", whom the coach considered the main candidate to replace the Belgian.
However, although the transfer was almost agreed, the Frenchman decided to stay in the English capital and "Everton" was left with nothing. They also failed to borrow Diego Costa.
"I was one step away from an agreement with Olivier Giroud", - Koeman told the Dutch newspaper VI. "He would have been ideal for us, but at the last moment he decided to continue living in London and stay at Arsenal.
"It was really hard to accept. Tell me where you can find a better striker? Lukaku was very important to us not only for his goals. As a forward, he had a unique playing style - based on strength."
"He could hold the ball, always saw the goal, and was fast. If things didn't go well in the matches, if we couldn't play the way we were used to, there was always the possibility for him to make a long pass."
"Suddenly (after Giroud's decision) we lacked such a player. With Nikola Vlašić and Wayne Rooney, we had forwards who want to have the ball at their feet."
"When it's difficult to build attacks from defense as a team and you no longer have the option to make a long pass, then you know you have a problem."
Merseyside club currently occupies only the 18th place in the Premier League, and yesterday they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup.
