Former "Arsenal" and French national team star Robert Pires, at the age of 42, announced that he is ending his career.
The winger has also played for "Metz", "Marseille", "Villarreal" and "Aston Villa" during his career, and spent his last years in India, at the "Goa" club. Today, the Frenchman revealed that he is finishing a football career that began in 1993.
"I am already 42 years old and I think that after my last year in India, it is time to stop. I will make way for younger players," - Pires revealed his intentions speaking to L`Equipe.
Representing the French national team, Pires won the 1998 World Cup, the 2000 European Championship, and two Confederations Cups. The last time he wore the national team jersey was in 2004.
In club football, the Frenchman also excelled, and he achieved his biggest titles with the "Arsenal" club, where he played from 2000 to 2006. He won two Premier League trophies and three FA Cup medals. The only trophy missing from his collection was the Champions League title. Pires played in the 2006 final, when "Arsenal" lost to the "Barcelona" team. During the match, after Jens Lehmann received a red card, Pires was replaced by a reserve goalkeeper. By the way, those were the player's last matches in the "Gunners" team.
