„Liverpool“ striker Raheem Sterling won the annual „Golden Boy“ award given to young footballers playing in Europe. The 20-year-old footballer was recognized for his significant contribution not only to the successful past season of the club, but also for his outstanding performance in the ranks of the England national football team.
Since 2003, the Englishman is only the second player to win the awards organized by the magazine „Tuttosport“. In 2004, the best was then Everton player Wayne Rooney.
R. Sterling's main competitors were named as the „Manchester United“ discovery Adnan Januzaj, Leverkusen's „Bayer“ member Hakan Calhanoglu, and „Liverpool“ players Lazar Marković and Divock Origi.
„I always wanted to be recognized for my efforts in football. I am very grateful to have been chosen, I am very happy. Everything depends on hard work and I work hard to become better. I am truly very happy,“ - said the young R. Sterling.
Previously, players such as Lionel Messi (2005), Cesc Fàbregas (2006), Sergio Aguero (2007) and Mario Götze (2011) have won the award.
„There is always room for improvement. This year I could have scored more goals for sure, but not all opportunities are taken advantage of, but I am young and still learning,“ - admitted R. Sterling.
