On October 1, a referendum will be held on Catalonia's independence from Spain. The portal "Goal" discussed what would happen if the results of the vote were positive and how it could affect the famous "Barcelona" club.
The exact consequences are still unknown even to "La Liga" president Javier Tebas, who did not rule out the possibility that Catalans might be removed from the tournament.
"It would be necessary to study the Spanish laws, but it could happen that these teams will not be able to compete in the Spanish championship. I hope that this will not happen," said the head of "Barcelona", "Espanyol", and "Girona" teams.
It is claimed that the mentioned teams would establish their own league, but this would have huge negative consequences – the iconic "El Clasico" matches that thrill football fans would disappear, "Barcelona" would start the Champions League from the early qualifying rounds, and money would be lost from TV broadcasting rights.
One option to solve this situation is for Catalans to move to play in the French championship.
About such an idea former Prime Minister of the country Manuel Valls spoke a couple of years ago: "Monaco" plays in "Ligue 1", so why couldn't "Barcelona" do the same?
As an example, the Welsh "Swansea" team's participation in the "Premier" league is mentioned, but in the case of Catalans, it could take longer due to various bureaucratic procedures.
It's unclear how the club's leader Lionel Messi and other stars would react to the changes.
The results of the referendum could have a significant impact on the Spanish national team, which would lose players from this region.
There is not much time left to wait, and "Barcelona" fans hope that political decisions will not ruin their team.
