Ousmane Dembele's transfer is celebrated not only by Barcelona, but also by Rennes, the club he represented before moving to Borussia Dortmund.
The Catalans paid a fee of 105 million euros for the winger, with about 25 million going to the Ligue 1 representatives. Interestingly, both teams greatly profited from his transfer, as he only played for each team for one season.
This is a record-breaking sum received from a transfer for the club, even though Dembele did not directly sell himself to Rennes. The previous record was set back in 2000, when Shabani Nonda moved to Monaco for 20 million euros.
However, the French take more pride in the success of their graduate's career rather than the financial benefit, boosting their academy's reputation.
"By joining Barcelona, Ousmane Dembele also brings the Rennes school with him," the club announced.
"Ousmane Dembele took advantage of the club's opportunity to put in all the effort needed to reach the highest level."
"We are particularly proud of Ousmane Dembele's rise and sincerely wish him the greatest success in his career."
In his first professional season in 2015-2016, the winger played 26 Ligue 1 matches, scoring 12 goals.
